Clinical Expectations-
What to Expect with your Orthotic or Prosthetic Appointments

Before your first visit

  • Make an appointment (Be sure to ask if there is anything you need
    to bring)


During your first visit
  • Patient information
  • Patient history
  • Patient goals
  • Review prescription and/or professional reports
  • Explain funding
  • Physical exam
  • Gait analysis
  • Static functional evaluation without orthosis/prosthesis
  • Dynamic functional evaluation without orthosis/ prosthesis
  • Clinician will capture the shape of your body segment (ie. Cast, scan, measurements)
  • Treatment plan discussed



Follow up to first visit
  • Patient orientation to orthotic/ prosthetic treatment
  • Initial instructions
  • Evaluate the device interface (ie. Volume, pressure distribution)
  • Static functional evaluation with orthosis/prosthesis
  • Dynamic functional evaluation with orthosis/prosthesis
  • Outcome measure of orthotic/prosthetic treatment
  • Care and maintenance of orthosis/prosthesis
  • Body segment care related to orthotic/prosthetic use
  • Wearing schedule
  • Initial gait training



Taking care
  • Monitor the skin and contact your clinician should any issues arise
  • Training for use of upper extremity orthosis/prosthesis
  • Physical therapy for gait training
  • Make any required adjustments or maintenance repairs
